K-12 OUTREACH AND RESEARCH ADVISING
I conceived and have co-directed with Prof. Liz Ryder
this 5-week program, which brings selected high school rising juniors and seniors to our BCB research labs to work with WPI faculty, graduate and undergraduate students on research projects using Computer Science and Mathematics to solve problems in Biology and Medicine.
The program has generated a great deal of interest among high school students.
We have had strong cohorts of students (21 in 2016, 17 in 2017, and 19 in 2018) selected among a large pool of applicants.
Research advisors in this program have included WPI faculty in the
Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Program across 4 departments:
Biology: Profs. Gegear, Ryder, Shell and Vidali;
Computer Science: Profs. Harrison, Korkin and Ruiz;
Mathematics: Prof. Olson, Servatius and Wu;
Physics: Prof. Tuzel.
