Facilities for Graduate Students

The following facilities in the department are available to ALL graduate students (unsupported and supported).

• You can borrow CD-Rs containing the latest versions of MSOffice, MS Visual Studio, MS Frontpage and an upgrade from your MS Operating System (if you have one) to the current one from the library front desk and legally install them on your private PC.
• You can get access to the Fuller Labs building at any time. For this, you can apply to the Graduate Secretary for a building key. Students who plan to be here late on weekends, during term breaks, or in the summer months, should think about applying for this key since the building tends to be closed more often during those times.
• You have access to the department library -- the small room on the corner on second floor near the CS office. You can look at magazines and books in the library, and use the space to study or for meetings if it's not occupied.
• The Graduate Student Lounge on the first floor of Fuller Labs (FL142), provides kitchen equipment and mail boxes. After some equipment was stolen in May 2000, the door is kept locked. You should make sure that it shuts behind you when you leave.
  • The Lounge has most of the basic facilities for making and eating food (refrigerator, microwave, sink, table and chairs). An attempt at organizing a coffee maker and a new toaster has been averted by the department. We have found that the kitchen becomes dirty and filthy at a rapid pace and are still thinking about solutions to this problem. It is likely that we will find none, so expect small insects to crawl upon you when you are in that room. The supply of cleansing tools in there that we are keeping does not seem to help. Please don't take food that's not yours from the refrigerator and please do take food that is rotting and throw it out. We will keep cleaning out the refrigerator about once a week, i.e., all unlabeled food or expired that is in the refrigerator will be thrown away eventually. The freezer is also flushed occasionally.
  • A mailbox is available for every supported graduate student, located in the graduate lounge. Please check your mail regularly. If you want anything mailed to the department, have it sent to the following address:

• There are three laser printers: in the department's office (ps1), room FL142 (ps2) and the TA Offices in A21 (ps3), respectively. The printers print duplex (double-sided). Please don't print more than you need to and pick up your print jobs quickly, since they will be thrown away after two weeks. Recently, the department has been keeping track of everyone's printer usage.
• The copier and overhead maker in the copy room on second floor, is available for TAs, but for general use you must ask the secretaries since it is not free.

For the building key and the grad lounge key (as well as for your office key if you are TA/RA), you will have to apply to the graduate secretary in the main Computer Science department office.
