Banner Web Information System Electronic Advising Folders [FAQ]

Summary

During the past year, the Committee on Advising and Student Life (CASL) worked with the Registrar, the Director of Academic Advising and the Advanced Technology Center to improve how the Banner Web Information System supports undergraduate advising. In this email, I provide a brief summary of the new capabilities. More detailed information can be found by accessing

    http://web.cs.wpi.edu/~heineman/html/service_/CASL/electronicFolder.html

In the Faculty Advisor menu of Banner, there is a new "Advisee List" entry that will provide you with a "Dashboard Overview" of your current advisees. Your advisees are grouped by year and important "Performance Indicators" are listed for each student, showing important information including which degree requirements have been satisfied and whether an advisee is overloading (or underloading). From this list you can bring up an "Electronic Folder" for individual students to review their progress and registered activity for the year. You can enter private comments for your own use, or enable your advisee to see these comments (note: until student functionality is deployed, your advisees will not be able to see your comments!).

Currently, only the faculty functionality is available for these Electronic Folders. We are still testing and improving the student functionality. The student functionality will be deployed in the upcoming weeks. Your student advisees will then be able to review their academic record and create (and maintain) four-year schedules for their planned academic activity.

We expect these new capabilities will enhance your advising experience. You may have noticed, for example, that there were no hard-copy folders for first year students; using the new system, you can access your advising information whether you are on campus, at home, or abroad at a project center.

Visit the Dashboard Overview to quickly see whether any of your advisees needs immediate help. Ask your students to post a planned schedule and then begin a dialog regarding the proposed schedule. The Electronic Folder will maintain the record of your comments so you and your advisee can remember the various topics and plans discussed. You will be able to generate a degree evaluation from within the folder so you can evaluate your advisee's progress towards meeting degree requirements.

If you have any questions, comments, or requests to either add or modify existing functionality, please send email to chairCASL@WPI.
