  1. The first well-known document processing language, RUNOFF, was a markup language; one of the newest document processing languages, SGML, is a markup language. Thirty years have passed. Has nothing changed? Explain.

RUNOFF describes physical structure ; SGML describe logical structure Also SGML generates markup languages, while RUNOFF is a markup language.

  2. You may have noticed that HTML looks a lot like SGML. What is the exact relationship between these two (you may need to hunt around for this answer or think about what you read about SGML.)

SGML was used to generate (create) HTML

  3. If 8 companies were using ODA, there would be a total of 16 converters. Why?

Each company needs 2 and 2*8=16

  4. If there were no common language like ODA, how many converters would the 8 companies need altogether?

    Each company needs a convertor for the 7 others: 8 * 7 = 56

  5. What was the first way to transfer an image from computer to paper

    Screendump

  6. What is the difference between SGML and ODA?

SGML describes only the logical document while ODA describes both the physical and the logical - in fact, the default description, if only 1 is give, is assumed to be the physical document.

  7. What is the difference between a structured document and a style sheet?

Style sheets describe only the physical document, not the logical structure.

  8. What is your definition of a PDL?

    Answers given include:

A language facilitating the integration of text and graphics and allowing the efficient transfer of information form the host system to the printer

A language for specifying style and layout of text and graphics for a document.

  9. Why is there no such thing really as WYSIWYG?

Because resolution on the screen is much poorer than resolutions on paper.

  10. Name 3 Script Languages.

Answers given include: Kaleida Labs Script, hyeprTalk, Perl, JavaScript, Shell languages, PASTERP.

  11. What is the difference between an SGML DTD parser and the generated document parser?

This was a freebie. Just checking again that people understood lab#9.

The SGML DTD parser inputs a DTD which describes the tags of a markup language and outputs the document parser. The generated document parser inputs a marked up document and checks that it is marked up as specified in the DTD.
