RUNOFF

RUNOFF was the formatter used in CTSS (Compatible Time Sharing System) at MIT in the mid 60's. Command lines began with a period. See the primitive markup example.

All markup dealt with the physical structure of the document.

RUNOFF has continued to develop over the years, and influenced later systems such as FORMAT (late 60's) developed for the IBM 360,and nroff and troff (middle 70's) for Unix.
