An `AI in Design' View of Design
System Knowledge

Models

Does the system rely on models?
What kinds of models does the system use?

Discussion. Models integrate knowledge related to particular aspects of an artifact. Model-based systems generate designs based on expectations with respect to those properties which are modelled [Addanki et al. 1989] [Nayak 1992]. The design process is focused on aspects consistent with and relevant to the chosen model. Structural models gather information about components and the way they can be interconnected. Functional models describe how functions interact, can be decomposed, shared or implemented. Behavioral models give an account of the way the system might act in the physical world [Goel 1992] [Keller et al. 1992] [Sembugamoorthy & Chandrasekaran 1986].
