An `AI in Design' View of Design
System Knowledge

Histories

Does the system keep any record of its activity?

Discussion. Keeping a record of various types of actions, which took place during the design process, can be useful for several purposes. Histories serve as a store of experience, available for use in similar situations in future designs [Brown et al. 1992]. Histories are also a rich source of material for learning [Duffy 1997] [Mitchell et al. 1985]. Previous stored cases can be used as a basis for abstraction or analogy [Huhns & Acosta 1992] [Zhao & Maher 1992], while cases with common similarities may help synthesize generalized knowledge. Other histories related to the design may help gather observations applicable to future designs [Mostow et al. 1992].
