Early markup languages like RUNOFF used special words at the beginning of a line to control the formatting:

Above, .ctr causes the words that follow to be centered on the page.

.sp 2 causes 2 blank lines to be inserted. .nj means that what follows is not to be justified.

Notice that the formatting commands are interspersed in the text.
