User Involvement

Is the user included in the design process?
In what way?

e.g., providing critiques or evaluations, making selections, suggesting recovery from failures, etc.

Discussion. Some phases of the design process require processing capabilities which are beyond the capabilities of design systems. The user may be asked to assist the system in complex decisions. The user can be helpful in evaluating a decision by using their additional knowledge. Users may be asked to make selections where the system's criteria are insufficient to decide in favor of one of the alternatives [Steinberg 1992]. Repeated failures may need the intervention of the user to suggest fixes.
