Getting Started

Prof. David Brown has prepared a graduate student information sheet that you should pick up at the graduate secretary's desk or view on the web.

You may also want to have a look at Prof. Brown's views on Research Group Meetings and TA/RA Commitment.

The first step after you're here (besides finding an apartment, and maybe a car) is to obtain a Student ID, which you can get at Boynton Hall. You do not have to be registered to get that card, neither do you need a Social Security number. Bring your admission letter and some ID (passport or US driving license). After getting your ID, you can get a computer account from WPI and (later) from the CS department, and you can register for courses.

If you are an international student and plan to work, you should obtain a Social Security Number, and you will also need a bank account (big banks are Fleet and BankNorth, smaller banks are Commerce, Southbridge Savings, Worcester Five Cents, etc.). If you plan to stay longer, you should get a driving license, and if you are into bars or night clubs or anything that involves alcohol, you will at least need a "liquour ID" which is the same as a driving license, except that you don't need to know how to drive.
