Faculty and Alums Share Memories
"I was a teaching assistant while working on my degree. I appeared around 1985 after a 10 year stretch as a mechanical engineer. So I was a little older than my fellow teaching assistants and closer to the faculty ages. It was a nice friendly environment. Enjoyed the people I met and the learning experience. My thesis advisor was Stan Selkow, I was never very good at finishing a thesis; and it dragged on for close to 10 years so my official graduation date was long after I started. But I got to know Stan ad Debbie pretty well during that period. At the end of my 2nd year I got a summer internship with DEC in Maynard. It was good insight into what a large corporation was like; and not especially to my taste; so I stayed with small companies and fairly soon became an independent consultant." -- '95
"I remember being present for the birth of the World Wide Web, and that WPI was one of the first places to host a web server! We ran NCSA Mosaic on DECstations in the CCC. I also remember "LAN party" gaming in the basement of Fuller; where we (unofficially) installed Quake and Unreal in the PC labs and played all night long." -- '96
"The walk up and down the hill in all seasons from Highland Ave direction where I lived." -- '97
"I had 2+ years of weekly meetings with my thesis advisor, prof Finkel; where he never once uttered a discouraging word. despite nothing ever working as planned. Just before graduation; with the thesis done and the IEEE papers published; he fessed up that was once concerned I would never make it... He was glowing with pride." -- '98
"I remember:* The collegiality found in our department, which has remained strong to this day.* Taking graduate students to a local dive bar/diner after final exams were over. * How I take videos of the students in my classes so I can more quickly learn their names (hey; seven week terms are short!)* Lunch in the wedge between 12 and 12:30 because afternoon classes met on the half hour; and everyone had this time off* Getting sun-burned while sitting on the quad for my first graduation ceremony; afterwards I always resorted to SPF-70 to survive* Holding departmental bowling parties on campus; because why not?* The successful ACM sponsored music performances; a tradition which still continues* Colleagues who passed away far too soon (Lee Becker; Matt Ward)* Advising my first PhD student; Alok Mehta; to a successful degree" -- '96
"I came to WPI fresh out of grad school in 1997, with my eldest son only 1 1/2 and my wife pregnant with my youngest. Since that time; WPI has been a big part of all of our lives." -- '97
Faculty and Alums Identify WPI People Who Made a Personal Impact
"Professor Matthew Ward -- amazing collaborator and generous friend." -- '96
"Stan Selkow comes to mind first" -- '95
"Bob Kinicki hired me in 1996, which was the best thing that happened to me professionally! He also set a standard for excellence in service as an active faculty member within our department and in the wider campus." -- '96
