        1. In a speech on Science and Technology, Kerry cites as an example of an "amazing discovery", the intelligent tutor technology. Kerry said "At Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University, researchers have developed a virtual algebra tutor that has helped inner-city kids in under-served schools raise their scores an entire letter grade." (article) Neil Heffernan, who joined Carnegie Mellon University's intelligent tutoring project in 1995 and got his PhD in 2001, has had his patented software, that advances the current intelligent tutoring technology, licensed to the spin-off company that has sold this technology into thousands of schools across the United States.
