Aussie Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

There are lots of interesting differences in the so-called "God-given rights" between the U.S. and Australia. My favorite is gun-control. Basically, you must have a license to own a gun, and the only reasons you can have one are hunting (rifles only), farming (shooting rabbits), or being a member of a target-shooting club. Self-protection is NOT ample reason to be given a license. The number of people killed by guns is pathetically small....

I also like the seat-belt and helmet laws (helmets required for motorcycles AND bicycles). Another interesting law requires people to vote - failure to do so may result in a fine....

Other laws I find rather annoying. One is the so-called "move along" law, which means that drunk and disorderly people don't get arrested unless they fail to "move along" when requested by police. For example, at a recent festival featuring food and wine, massive outbreaks of drunken antics occurred, including throwing beer bottles at crowds of people (including many children). Nearly 100 people were injured, but no one was arrested due to this silly law. I guess it is a right of all Australians to get plastered and make an ass of yourself in public.

On the other hand, public demonstrations critical of the police or the government can quickly lead to arrest. Police are rather heavy-handed on foreigners and Aboriginals when it comes to beating (all too frequent) and arresting offenders. Racism is alive and well down-under.

Other freedom-related attitudes are worthy of note. While Australians aren't quite as homophobic as the Irish in Boston (the gay and lesbian parade in Sydney was broadcast on T.V. during prime time, and got the highest viewer rating for the week), they still are behind the times in terms of legislation to protect people of "non-traditional persuasions". There is also a real problem here with teenage pregnancy, largely due to the age of consent being a ridiculously low 15 (one of the major political parties supports reduction of the age to 13!!!).
