Scripting Languages are a perfect example of something old combined with
something new. The "new" is that they often refer to objects
(e.g., "buttons" in Asymetrix's Multimedia ToolBook); the "old" refers
to the syntax of these languages, which is procedural, at best.
Like assembly languages, though, they are similar enough so that learning one
of them speeds the learning of others.
Scripting languages (e.g., Kaleida Labs' ScriptX) are just beginning to
use the same language for different machines.
HyperTalk (for the Mac's Hypercard) is one of the best known scripting
languages.
