Charles Goldfarb

Charles Goldfarb led a group at IBM in the early 1980's to develop text processing tools.

He coined the term "Generalized Markup" which he defined to be markup which describes a document's structure. The terms descriptive and declarative are also used to mean generalized markup.

Goldfarb developed a language called GML - Generalized Markup Language.

He also led the team which developed SGML.
