Fall 2005

WPI Teaching Assistant Training Schedule

Teaching Assistant (TA) Training at WPI consists of eight sessions that are relevant to TAs coming from any department. Four of these sessions are “Background Sessions” that are designed to provide information and experiences that will help TAs to better understand the culture of WPI and the challenges TAs are likely to encounter. The additional four sessions are “Practical Sessions” that are focused on helping TAs to develop skills to effectively manage the day-to-day demands of being a TA. Here is a listing of the sessions:

   BACKGROUND SESSIONS

·        Cross-cultural Communication

·        Ethics, Legal Issues, and Legal Rights

·        Know Your Students

·        What Makes a Good TA?

   PRACTICAL SESSIONS

·        Running Review and Help Sessions

·        Running Effective Office Hours

·        Evaluating and Grading Student Performance

·        Preparing and Delivering Classroom Presentations

The sessions are provided by WPI faculty, WPI staff, and external consultants. All new TAs are required to participate in all eight TA Training sessions.
