Interface Design Report
Due: Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 11:59pm

Objective: THIS REPORT SHOULD BE DONE INDIVIDUALLY!

In this report, you will explore the interface design options for a user to carry out a given task, in a given environment. Compared to your Final Projects, where you had complete freedom for choosing both the devices and the task, in this report, you will be constrained to a particular task.

What to do: In this report, you will not actually build anything, but rather focus on analyzing a given task/application and determine the various options for designing an interface that supports users performing the task.

The set of steps you will perform are:

  1. Choose one task from a list
  2. Perform a detailed analysis of the task
  3. Determine where inefficiencies or weaknesses exist in current interfaces for the task
  4. Resolve those weaknesses by redesigning all or part of the interface experience

In class, I gave a more detailed description of this report.

Your report should be long enough to say what you need to say, and no longer. If you ask me to put a page length on it, I would say about 10-15 pages, 1.5 line spacing.

List of Applications: Here is the list of applications for you to choose from as the focus of your report.
  1. In-car navigation system
  2. Manipulating Google maps
  3. Console-based fighting game (e.g., Mortal Kombat)
  4. Home security monitoring
  5. Patient monitoring on a hospital ward
  6. Urban Search and Rescue Robots
  7. Ask me if you have a different one!

What to Submit: Your design report should be submitted by 11:59 pm on Thursday, October 15, 2009.

Please email your complpeted reports to me gogo [at] wpi.edi.
