Video 1 (QuickTime, 06:02, 73MB)

Questions:

  1. In the video, I talk about the types of mechanoreceptors that are found in the skin. Do a search on the Internet and find which types there are. Please don't cut-and-past your answer, but give a short overview.
  2. In the video, I talk about the tight coupling between sensing and action within the haptic sense. How is this interaction loop influenced by other sensory information gathered from the interaction?

Video 2 (QuickTime, 10:01, 127MB)

Question:

  1. Given the variation in haptic "resolution" on different parts of the body, discuss how and where would you construct a "haptic HUD" for information such as:
    1. a map for navigating to an objective in an FPS,
    2. the number of laps you've completed in a racing game, and
    3. the action of picking up a health pack.

Video 3 (QuickTime, 18:14, 246MB)

Questions:

  1. What do you see as the main tradeoffs between active and passive haptic feedback?
  2. Do you think sensory substitution as it is commonly used in games is effective?
