CS 4518 C Term 2018 Final Project (35/100 of course grade)

Project Requirements

I previously described what your final project should be about in my lecture 7 slides [ Final Project: Guidelines for 1-Slide submission ] . You are required to propose and develop an Android app that solves a problem that WPI students face. The app is to use mobile and ubiquitous computing components and project difficulty scores are assigned accordingly. The following rubric describes how to difficulty points (20 points max) will be assessed [ Difficulty Points Rubric ]

For the final project, your GROUP will need to do the following:

More detail and point allocation for each project aspect is given below:

1 Slide (2/35 of project grade): Submit 1 slide with 3 bullets specifying a) what problem your app will tackle b) Why that problem is important and c) Summary of how your app will work/solve this problem
5-min Pitch (8/35 of project grade): All groups will pitch their ideas in 5 mins. You should plan to present the material in your 1-slide (problem, why it's important and your solution) plus an implementation plan (Android Modules used, software architecture, screen mockups or sketches and timeline with who will do what.). The grading rubric can be found here [ Project proposal grading rubric ]. For uniformity, use the powerpoint template below (in important links section below) for your presentation. The time limit of 5 minutes is strict. Points will be deducted for going over 5 minutes.
Final project presentation (15/35 of project grade): All groups will present their projects across 2 class days (February 26 & March 1). This final talk will last 10 minutes and describe your entire project and accomplishments including everything contained in your 5-min pitch plus showing off the final product. You should capture a video of your final project and play it back. Live demos are generally not encouraged. A good idea is to post the video of your app on YouTube and play it back during your talk. You will have to submit your code though (See submission section below). For uniformity, use the powerpoint template below (in important links section below) for your presentation. The time limit of 10 minutes is strict. Points will be deducted for going over 10 minutes.
Final Paper (10/35 of project grade): The paper should be written and formatted just like academic conference papers (like those we have read in class). The paper should be in a 2-column format and have similar sections to the papers we have read and discussed in class (Introduction, Related Work Approach/Methodology, Implementation, Evaluation/Results, Discussion, Conclusion and Future Work). An ideal page limit would be 5 pages. Writing more or less will not be penalized. Microsoft Word and Latex templates that you should use for the final paper are posted under the "Important Links" section below.

Submitting Your Work

Make sure to double-check that everything works before submitting. Submit all your executable and source files. Create the following folders:

slides\: Put your powerpoint presentation slides of your final project talk here.
video\: Put the video you captured that shows off your final app working here.
paper\: Put your paper describing your final project here
code\: Put all your code and executable here with instructions (README file) on how to compile and run it.

Before submitting MAKE SURE YOUR PROJECT RUNS Create a single zip file containing the folders above. Name your zip file according to the convention LastName1_LastName2_LastName3_LastName4_LastName5_final_project.zip where LastName1, LastName2, LastName3, LastName4 and LastName5 are the last names of your group members. Submit your zip file via InstructAssist. Do not email me or the TAs your zip file.
