CS 403X, Spring Semester Project 0: Getting Start, Android Setup and Practice
Not to be submitted!!

The aim of this project is to get you to set up your Account for the book, and to run a few tutorials that will help you set up and run Android Studio in the zoolab and at home (Optional). You are not required to submit anything, but doing this project is very important to get you started with the class.

Step 1: Course Text Subscription

The course text is free, but requires that you subscribe and generate the text in any formats you may want. For instance you can generate a PDF version to read and also an APK file that you can run on your phone anywhere you want. You will have to enter the subscription code that I will email you.

To use the above coupon code, create an account on the Warescription site (https://wares.commonsware.com). Then, click "Subscribe!" in the nav bar at the top of the page, paste in the coupon code and your name in the "Apply a Coupon" form, then submit the form. Your book editions should be ready in 20-30 seconds if nobody else's books are being generated right then, in the "Your Book" portion of the site.

Step 2: Run Android Studio Tutorials in the zoolab

The next part of the assignment involves going to the Zoolab in the Fuller basement. You should have access to that lab if you registered for this course. Android Studio is already installed in the zoolab. You just have to run the following tutorials 1-8 from Bucky Roberts on Youtube. Tutorials 1 and 2 involve installing Java and Android Studio. Even though you cannot follow these steps in the zoolab, you should still watch the tutorials for your education.

The Tutorials from Bucky Roberts:

Next, do tutorials 1-4 from the course text. Tutorial #2 shows you how to download the free example code from the text for your use.

Note: In the zoolab machines, the path for Java 1.8 is C:\Java\jdk1.8.0_25

Step 3 (Optional): Android Studio Tutorials on your Home Machine

This part of the project 0 is optional and you should do it only if you intend to use your home machine or laptop to do some of the class projects. Simply repeat the tutorials above including doing tutorials 1 and 2 from Bucky Roberts (installing Java and Android Studio on your home machine).
