An `AI in Design' View of Design
Methodology
Reasoning SpacesIn what kind of spaces is the reasoning carried out?
Does the system use any mappings between these spaces?e.g., behavioral, structural, functional (for the designed artifact) or the space of design plans (for the design process)
Discussion. Many design systems develop a reasoning framework guided by the criteria specific to one of the spaces previously mentioned. This depends primarily on the type of design problem. In some design systems it is the case that more than one design space is used, for example, functional and structural [Umeda & Tomiyama 1997]. The system often has to provide a mapping between the spaces, which is a difficult task. There is no guarantee of a one-to-one mapping from one space to another. A behavior can be generated by a group of components and a component can be responsible for several functions simultaneously [Ulrich 1992].
