An `AI in Design' View of Design
Problem Description
Output
What does the system generate as output?
Describe it in design terminology:
e.g., rough designs, configurations, parameter values, etc.
and in terms of representation.
e.g., plans, cases, sets of values, models, histories, etc.
Discussion. The output characterizes the goals of the design system. It also tells us how powerful the system is. A system which just computes design parameter values is probably ``weaker'' than a system which generates an entire configuration and the values for the parameters [Wielinga & Schreiber 1997]. The output representation is important if the system is an input provider for another system (for example, a graphical interface which represents the generated configurations on the screen).
