CS556: Foundational Aspects of Database Systems

Paper Presentation

For the class, you will present a paper (or) report on a project that you have been doing as part of your research. You will give a 45 minute presentation, that will describe the paper. When you describe a paper, keep the following in mind: (a) you do not have to describe all the details in the paper, describe the most important aspects, and describe them clearly (b) if you have additional opinions about the topic, or the paper, do include them and try to lead a discussion. Make sure you are ready with the talk the week before your presentation, and meet with the instructor with your talk.

In addition to the presentation, you will write a report based on the paper (or) project that you presented. For the report, try to aim for a maximum of 3 pages. It is important that your report be comprehensive and concise. Describe (a) the overall topic in general (b) specific subproblem, or the angle from which the authors attack the problem (c) the main results, techniques etc (d) your critique as to what can be improved, any additional ideas you have etc. Again, do not just blindly copy the algorithm from the paper, in stead explain the algorithm in your own words, say with your own example.

You will also critique every talk. These critiques will be gathered and returned to the speaker. I have prepared a very simple set of questions to be answered as part of your critique, you can find that here
