Regarding when to approach the instructor or TAs with questions outside of class, please keep in mind the following. We are always willing and eager to answer your questions, and would like you to master the topics covered in a timely manner. There are different venues for bringing questions outside the lecture hours: (a) during office hours, (b) over email explaining your problem, (c) trying to set up an appointment or (d) dropping by their office. Of this (d) might not be very useful if the instructor or TA is not available or in another meeting. However, if you have any problem whatsoever, do NOT hesitate to approach the instructor or the TAs.

Objectives

Database systems are a critical component of today's software systems. This second course in database systems concentrates on the study of the internals of such database management systems. That is, we will look "under the hood" to learn about the key techniques and technologies within database systems. The knowledge gained should be useful not only for building a variety of types of software systems that have to handle data of large volumes, but also for most effectively using a commercial DBMS system.
