CS3043 Document Format

Citations

There are many different formats used for citations in scholarly papers. It seems that each journal has its own unique version. However, there appear to be two main variations:
  1. Most journals in the social sciences and humanities use some variant of the Modern Language Association format. This is the one you probably learned in high school and used for your sufficiency, where the footnotes are numbered and repeated references are marked with ibid. and op. cit.
  2. Most journals in the physical and mathematical sciences (including computer science) use a format where the author's name and the date are enclosed in [square brackets]. Since CS3043 is a computer science course, we will use the second format.

For more information, see the section marked "Citations" in the Instructions for Authors for the journal Computing Surveys at http://www.acm.org/surveys/Authors.html#ManuscriptPreparation.

Note: Do not worry about the other directions on that page (such as LaTeX formatting macros). Just follow the directions for citations.
