---------------------------------------------------------------------- JOINT DATA/KNOWLEDGE BASE RESEARCH SEMINAR (DKBRG) AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RESEARCH SEMINAR (AIRG) Department of Computer Science Worcester Polytechnic Institute SPEAKER: Prof. Carolina Ruiz TITLE: Sampling Methods for Mining Patterns from Large Databases DATE: Thursday April 6, 2000 TIME: 11 am ROOM: FL246, Beckett Conference Room. ABSTRACT: Some data mining methods don't scale well to very large databases. An approach to solving this problem is to select a reasonably-sized, representative subset of the database and to apply the mining method to this sample. In this talk, I'll discuss sampling algorithms for selecting the initial subset over which to mine the patterns as well as sampling algorithms to maintain the mined patterns current after database updates. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Everyone is welcome to attend!
