---------------------------------------------------------------------- ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RESEARCH SEMINAR Department of Computer Science Worcester Polytechnic Institute SPEAKER: Prof. David C. Brown TITLE: "Classification and Selection" DATE: Thursday, March 16, 2000 TIME: 11 am ROOM: FL246, Beckett Conference Room. ABSTRACT: Clancey's 1984 paper (and its longer journal version) is a classic! It was part of the movement that lead to the Problem Solving Method (PSM) view of knowledge-based systems. This view attempts to isolate the "knowledge level", domain-independent description of the task or tasks being done by an expert. Classification, as an element of Diagnosis, was the first task to be investigated and described. Clancey's paper made a major contribution to our inderstanding of Classification and of several classic Expert Systems that existed then. Reading: W.J. Clancey "Classification Problem Solving" Proc. AAAI-84, 1984, pp. 49-55. The paper is now available in your CS mailbox or in the AIRG mailbox in the CS dept office.
