J. S. Gero, Design Prototypes: A Knowledge Representation Schema for
Design. AI Magazine, Special Issue on Design, (Eds) J. S. Gero &
M. L. Maher, AAAI, Vol. 11, No. 4, Winter 1990, pp. 27-36. 



Gero's paper contributes in several ways. First it provides a simple,
but often cited, model of the logic of designing, based on the
comparison of desired behavior of a design with its actual behavior.
Second, it describes the use of prototypes as a way of organizing
design knowledge. Third, it provides a sketch of the differences
between creative and regular designing. Gero reports that it is his
most cited paper.
