RATIONALE "Chandrasekaran, AI Mag." B. Chandrasekaran, "Design Problem Solving: A Task Analysis". AI Magazine, Special Issue on Design, (Eds) J. S. Gero & M. L. Maher, AAAI, Vol. 11, No. 4, Winter 1990, pp. 59-71. This paper hypothesises that a much of designing corresponds to a pattern of reasoning that corresponds to Propose, then Critique, then Modify. It is another example of an attempt to describe designing: in this case, more than just routine design. It is included here in the course because it attempts to explain the variety to be found in design reasoning, both from people and from systems. By showing how each part of the pattern can be carried out in many different ways, it reveals why there are so many instances of that pattern (i.e., lots of variety). The paper also introduces the concept of domain independent but task specific reasoning, and the concept of recursive task-to-method decomposition.
