Abstract:

With more than 14 million licensed seats and over 30 public case studies, the Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) technology developed in Cambridge, MA is changing how enterprises deploy and manage applications.  App-V allows applications to be placed in a “sandbox,” insulating the underlying operating system from modification.  This separation of application state (debris) from the OS allows for simplified management of end user’s desktops, and eliminates application compatibility issues.  Deployment of updates to applications in an enterprise is greatly simplified.  Applications can be streamed on-demand, allowing rich fully featured windows applications can be deployed over the internet.  We will present a high level overview of App-V, and it’s purpose, as well as technical insight into how this state separation is achieved.

We will also briefly present an overview of the various teams / projects under way at Microsoft New England Research & Development (MS NERD) and our plans for future growth.

Matt Young graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science from WPI in 2000.  Since then he’s been an engineer at Microsoft.  He spent 6 years in the Windows CE Core OS group, where he worked to validate CE’s compilers and kernel debugger before moving into a development role working closely with Microsoft’s embedded partners to help bring a set-top-boxes, VoIP phones, and Windows Mobile devices to market.  He spent 2 years working at the European Microsoft Innovation Centre (http://www.emic.eu), a facility dedicated to collaborative R&D with European research partners.  There he worked in the areas of Mobile P2P, and Embedded Systems.  Since 2008 he’s been working at Microsoft New England Research & Development (MS NERD – http://www.microsoftcambridge.com) in the Application Virtualization group (http://www.microsoft.com/appv).
