Being Away: Tales of Two Faculty on Sabbatical

Prof. Matthew Ward

Prof. Mark Claypool

WPI – Computer Science

Prof. Ward: This was my third sabbatical.  My previous sabbaticals have been industrial research positions; my original plan for this time was to work at the National Visualization and Analysis Center at Pacific Northwest Labs.  Funding for this fell through at the last minute, so I ended up working half time on a visualization textbook and the rest of the time consulting and writing grant proposals.  In this talk, I'll briefly review my first two sabbaticals and then describe my experiences over the past year.

Bio: Prof. Ward has been a member of the CS department since 1986.  His research interests are primarily in the areas of data and information visualization.

Prof. Claypool: This talk provides highlights from two projects that begun over the past year: 1) an affordable, first-look framework to test new system combinations that support military concept of operations; and 2) detailed measurements of the motion and scene complexities for a wide variety of video games, useful for the design and development of thin game clients.

Bio: Mark Claypool is an Associate Professor in Computer Science at WPI and the Director of the Interactive Media and Game Development major. Mark earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the  University of Minnesota in 1993 and 1997, respectively.  His primary research interests include multimedia networking, congestion control, and network games.  He and his wife have 2 kids, a dog, and a bunch of computers, video gadgets and game consoles.
