Engaging Computing for Hands-On Engineering & Science

Fred Martin, Assoc. Prof,

UMass Lowell Computer Science

Abstract:

Fred will present projects around the theme of "engaging computing" -- making computing more accessible and exciting to young learners with connections to art, science, and engineering.  Projects include Art + Robotics = Artbotics, (an undergraduate course and high school after-school program), iCODE (a middle-school after-school program), and iSENSE (internet system for networked sensor experimentation).

Dr. Fred Martin is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.  Martin directs the Engaging Computing Group, which develops technology that enables children, teachers, engineers, and artists to design interactive, embodied computational systems.  In 2006, Martin was a recipient of the NSF Faculty Early Career Development award.

Previously, Martin was a research scientist at the Media Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he developed a series of educational robotics materials.  Martin also contributes to Gleason Research, a robotics company he co-founded with his wife Wanda Gleason, and has consulted on a variety of educational projects in the United States and across the world, including Ireland, Brazil, Thailand, and Mexico.
