Abstract:

In this talk I will describe new learning technologies which permit rigorous opportunities for research on learning as well as new affordances for student learning. Two technology-based science education projects, namely, Modeling Across the Curriculum (mac.concord.org), and ASSISTments meets Inquiry will be described as exemplars of projects that leverage cognitive theory and technology to support students’ science learning and scientific literacy.

Janice Gobert is Research Associate Professor of Learning Sciences in the Computer Science Department and the Social Sciences and Policy Studies Department. Her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (1994) is in Cognitive Science. Her specialty is in technology-based learning. Before coming to WPI, Janice was Senior Research Scientist at the Concord Consortium, an educational research and development organization in Concord, MA (www.concord.org). Until December 2007, Janice served as North American Editor for the International Journal of Science Education. She has a long history of funding from the NSF, and is currently collaborating with Neil Heffernan of CS, with whom she shares 2 new NSF awards on technology-based science learning and assessment.
