Friday, 17 March 2006
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Design is an activity requiring intelligence, and therefore is an excellent area for Artificial
Intelligence researchers to study. The area of "AI in Design" has been active for almost
25 years. The field's contributions include models of design reasoning and details of the
types of knowledge used, as well as implemented design systems. In this presentation,
as an introduction to the field, we will review a few of the many AI in Design projects that
have been done at WPI.
David Brown is Professor of Computer Science and has a collaborative appointment
as Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He has
B.Sc., M.Sc., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, and is a member of the
ACM, IEEE Computer Society, AAAI, and IFIP WG 5.2. He is the Editor in Chief of
the Cambridge UP journal AIEDAM: AI in Engineering, Design, Analysis and
Manufacturing, and is on the editorial boards of several other journals.
Host:
Michael Gennert
Refreshments will be served.
