[MOTION]: Proposed by Glynis Hamel, seconded by Carolina Ruiz. To make the following experimental course permanent: CS 4445 Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery in Databases Cat. II Motion passed. ----------------------- CS4445 Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery in Databases Cat. II This course provides an introduction to Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) and Data Mining. KDD deals with data integration techniques and with the discovery, interpretation and visualization of patterns in large collections of data. Topics covered in this course include data warehousing and mediation techniques; data mining methods such as rule-based learning, decision trees, association rules and sequence mining; and data visualization. The work discussed originates in the fields of aritificial intelligence, machine learning, statistical data analysis, data visualization, databases and information retrieval. Several scientific and industrial applications of KDD will be studied. Recommended Background: CS4341 Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, MA2611 Applied Statistics I, and CS3431 Database Systems I This course will be offered in 2004-2005 and in alternating years thereafter. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Department of Computer Science Minutes for department meeting of December 14, 2004 The Education Committee brought the following motion. To add CS 4536 (Programming Languages) and CS 4120 (Analysis of Algorithms) to the theory and languages area of the undergraduate requirements. The rationale here is simply that these courses are a natural fit for this area. The motion engendered no controversy, and was passed by a vote of 13 to 0. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Minutes of the Department of Computer Science Meeting of September 19, 2006 Education Committee (Finkel) Presented a discussion that took place in the committee. Said that the new accreditation requirements that we shall face require "one year of mathematics and science," with a meaning that depends on what units are used to define a "year" worth of courses. He suggested that according to the interpretations he have we are in compliance. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Worcester Polytechnic Institute Computer Science Department Meeting Minutes December 11, 2007 Education Committee Proposes a change to the Computer Science degree requirements – DD Moved to add RBE to list of disciplines that satisfy the Science / Engineering Distribution Requirements. Discussed if flags will be raised at accreditation. Fewer labs? Does it weaken or overlap with other courses, ECE? All were in favor – 12-0 motion carried. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Worcester Polytechnic Institute Computer Science Department Meeting Minutes February 5, 2008 Education Committee: Software Security Engineering experimental course - K.
